How inputs create an adaptive checklist
Boat class, build year, hull material, propulsion and intended use determine the displayed checks. Identity, ownership, service records, engine hours, manuals and major modifications remain part of every document review. The list structures observations but does not replace manufacturer instructions, inspection ashore, a sea trial or an independent survey.
Record each finding with its location, photograph, source and next action. Keep safety-critical uncertainty visible and obtain competent advice. Only then can repair need, schedule and cost range support a defensible purchase decision.
Example: observation before diagnosis
Instead of writing “deck leak”, record the location, visible staining, weather, comparison area and photograph. Cause and remedy remain open. A surveyor can then assess the evidence independently rather than inheriting an early assumption presented as fact.

- a sea trial in meaningful conditions
- competent diagnosis of safety-critical findings
- checks on identity, ownership and contract documents
Turn the list into a decision aid

Each item needs status, observation, photograph or source and next action. “Not checked” is a valid outcome and differs from “no finding”. Only after competent review should safety uncertainty become repair scope, cost and a purchase condition.
After reviewing the result, identify which inputs are evidenced, estimated or unresolved. Save it to the purchase file only then, and review it again when a quotation, inspection or professional finding changes an assumption. Keep the earlier state traceable as part of the decision record.
